Sandstone is a type of sedimentary rock and you can find this in the sedimentary basins all over the world. Sandstone rock is made out of small grains of sand, or sand rock fragments, which contains many organic and inorganic materials inside. The size of the sand particles ranges from very minute to very small ones to around those with 2 millimeters in diameter. 


It also has a cementing material that binds together the sand particles and these are the spaces that are around the sand particles. Quartz is a type of sandstone that you can change into quartzite by using metamorphosis that is usually related to tectonic compression along with cryogenic belts. The hardness of the sandstone rock can vary from being soft to extremely hard. This usually depends on the sand grain particles within the rock the cast and the cement composition. 


The best part is that they are available in various colors such as grey, yellow, red, and even white. The usual variations in mineral and cement content will usually change the color of the sandstone. The type of casts that you can have with this material includes mostly quartz and feldspar. Sometimes a sandstone rock might be gritty in appearance as well. 




Composition of a Sandstone Rock 

The chemical composition of sandstone rock is one of the dominant factors in classic sedimentary rocks. A sandstone rock has unimaginable properties of hardness and chemical stability. The huge weathering cycle that the rocks go through makes them round shaped. 


The quartz grains evolve from plutonic rock. Feldspar that is found in the sand grains comes in two different sub-divisions. These are alkali feldspar and plagioclase feldspar. You can evenly distinguish the feldspar minerals when you observe them under a petro graphic microscope. 


Lithic fragments are more fine-grained or coarse-grained igneous rocks. There is also a small portion of accessory minerals in the sandstones and these include mica like muscovite and biotitic. Olivine, pyroxene, conundrum. These minerals that you find within a sandstone rock are more durable than being weathered away. 


Some heavy minerals that you find in sandstone include zircon, tourmaline, rutile, garnet, magnetite, and other resistant materials.  


Materialization of Sandstone Rock 

Sandstones occur because of sand granules cementing on top of one another. The type of cement binding the sand particles is calcite, clays, and silica. The clay and sediment materials are so small in size that they are not visible to the naked eye. 


The most common cementing materials are silica and calcium carbonate.  The environmental conditions of the place where the sand granules get deposited and form will depend on a lot of factors like sand grain size, sorting, composition, and the geometry of the sedimentary structures. 


Where to Find Sandstones Rocks? 

You can find sandstone rock under various conditions that include terrestrial environments such as in rivers, lakes, glacial coverings, lakes, and deserts. In a marine environment, sandstone can be found in deltas, beaches, tidal flats, sound waves, sand storms, and turbidities.
