Understanding When Brake Services and Repairs Are Needed

Brake is a device, which is used for slowing down or stopping the vehicle by applying pressure. These are the most important safety feature of your vehicle so they should always be in proper condition. Brake is made up of materials that wear down over time so they need to be checked and repaired. Whenever the brake pad is replaced brake fluid should also be changed.

If you notice these points then it indicates that vehicle needs brake service and repairs-
  • Any noise or vibration at the time of applying brake.
  • When the brake is applied vehicle pulls to either right or left.
  • The brake pad becomes too soft or spongy when pressed.
  • Anti-lock braking system warning light becomes on.
  • Inspection is not done for more than a year or 12000 miles.
  • Brake pedal goes to the floor or requires excess pressure to apply.

Parts of Braking System: -

  1. Brake Pads: Steel backing plates that convert kinetic energy to thermal energy through friction.
  2. Brake-Shoes: A part of the braking system which carries the brake lining in the brake drum.
  3. Brake Lining: These are consumable surfaces in the brake system.
  4. Rotor: It is cast iron brake disc connected to the wheel.
  5. Piston: A moving component contained by a cylinder.
  6. Brake Drum: It uses friction that happens due to a set of shoes that press outward against a rotating cylinder-shaped part.
  7. Caliper: Caliper is basically a device through which brake pads and piston are mounted. A caliper can either be floating or fixed.
  8. Master Cylinder: It is a device used to convert non-hydraulic pressure to hydraulic pressure. It also controls a slave cylinder on the opposite end of the hydraulic system.
  9. Vacuum servo/Brake Booster: A component which enhances the main cylinder by using a vacuum in the engine intake and works only when the vehicle is running.
Three common characteristics of brake service and repairs system: -
  • Friction- It is the force that opposes the motion of an object. To stop a moving object force is applied on opposite direction.
  • Pumping- A process of moving liquid, gas or any fluid.
  • Electromagnetic- A force between the electrons.

Types of Brake Service and Repairs-

Brake system varies with the type of vehicles like semi-trucks have air-brake system and cars have anti-lock brake system.
  • Disc brakers
  • Drum Brakers
  • Single-circuit hydraulic Brakers
  • Dual-circuit hydraulic brakers
  • Brake-by-wire
  • Anti-lock Braking System is commonly known as ABS
  • Power Brake Booster
  • Air Brakes
  • Advanced Emergency Braking System or AEBS
A complete brake service and repairs evaluation includes:
  • Micrometer measuring of rotors and drums.
  • Thickness and condition of pads and shoes.
  • Calipers and wheel cylinder examination.
  • Brake lines, hoses examination.
  • Complete inspection of master cylinder and hardware.
For a complete brake evaluation, it needs minimum time of 30 to 45 minutes. After completion of the evaluation you are provided with a written estimate of work required to be done and the approximate cost. After getting your green signal technical team will start their work.

# E- Brake in Brake Service and Repairs

E – Brake is an emergency brake system also known as hand brake or parking brake which is attached to a cable that is directly attached to brake system. Whenever brake is given, the cable immediately gets pulled and brake is activated. It is used in case of emergency like mechanical failure where foot brake is not working properly, if we use on regular driving then e-brake cable or e-brake shoes might be damaged.

So, here is a brief insight about brake service and repairs, types of brake, evaluation process, types of brake and parts of brake, etc. that can help you in the future.
